Reddit Lost Over 1 Million Search Visits a Week to AI Answers. Here's What That Means for Your Singapore Business

By Jon Ng, Founder, Novatise · 4 min read · 1 November 2026

Reddit is one of the most searched names on Google. It still couldn't keep the click.

On 29 October, Reddit told shareholders that during October its "search traffic has dropped by more than 1 million referrals on average per week" (Search Engine Journal). On the earnings call, CEO Steve Huffman put it bluntly: "The reality is, AI Mode does not drive traffic. Not for us, and not to anybody, as far as I know" (The Verge).

The next day, Reddit's shares fell 29.22%, its worst day since going public in 2024 (CNBC). A weak sales forecast played a part too. But the traffic warning is the part every business owner should pay attention to.

If Reddit can't keep the click, a clinic in Tampines or a contractor in Woodlands won't either. The question is no longer "do I rank?" It's "does the AI name me?"

What actually happened to Reddit

Here are the facts, without the drama:

  • Reddit's search referrals fell by more than 1 million a week on average in October (Search Engine Journal).
  • Reddit warned that if this continues, its daily active users could fall by a low double-digit percentage in Q4, from about 130 million (CNA).
  • Huffman said Google is "crawling us as hard as ever." Demand hasn't changed. Google just isn't sending people through (The Verge).
  • Reddit's response is to test a logged-in-only version of the site in select markets outside the US (CNBC).

Read that third point again. Google still reads Reddit's content. It uses it to write answers. It just doesn't send the visitor.

Why this matters more for a small business

Reddit has 130 million daily users and an app people open on purpose. It can afford to lose some search traffic.

Most Singapore SMEs can't. Your website might be the only place a new customer finds you. If an AI answer gives them three names and a phone number, they may never reach your site at all.

And the AI answer isn't only on Google. Customers ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude the same questions. Those assistants also give a short list. If you're not on it, you don't exist for that customer.

So the old goal, "get the click", is now only half the job. The other half is being the business the answer names.

How AI assistants decide who to name

There's no form you can fill in to get recommended. But the assistants lean on the same few signals:

  1. Clear facts they can read. Your name, address, hours, services and prices in plain text on your own site.
  2. Structured data. Schema markup (such as LocalBusiness) that states those facts in a format machines read easily.
  3. Agreement across sources. Your Google Business Profile, Facebook page, directories and website all say the same thing.
  4. Real reviews. Recent, genuine reviews, with replies from you.
  5. Answers to real questions. Pages that answer what customers actually ask, in short and direct language.

Reddit's own story shows why number 5 matters. Google reads Reddit because it's full of plain answers to real questions. Your site should be the plain answer for your own business.

A practical checklist for this week

You don't need a big project. Start here:

  • Ask the AI yourself. Open ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. Ask the question your customer would ask, with your area in it. Note who gets named.
  • Ask why. Follow up with "Why did you choose these?" The answer shows which sources it trusts.
  • Put your facts in text. Not only in an image, a PDF or an Instagram post.
  • Add schema. LocalBusiness or a more specific type, with the same details as your page.
  • Fix mismatched listings. Old addresses, old phone numbers and closed branches confuse the AI.
  • Ask for reviews. Ask happy customers, reply to every review, and never buy or fake one.
  • Write one FAQ page. Take the five questions you get most on WhatsApp and answer each in two or three sentences.
  • Re-test in two to three months. Use the same wording so you can compare.

The click is shrinking. The mention isn't.

Reddit didn't lose its audience's interest. It lost the path from Google to its site. That path is getting shorter for everyone.

The good news for small businesses: the fixes are basic. Clear facts, consistent listings, real reviews and honest answers. Most of your competitors haven't done them yet.
